Learning Plan

Lesson is based on 40-minute class periods but can be modified to meet your needs.

Flip: Students watch a video defining the three verbal phrases we plan to cover: gerund, participle, and infinitive.

Day 1:

Students are divided into small groups of three members each. They are asked to find an example of each type of verbal phrase. Each member of the group should be able to explain why each example is correct. My students know Purdue’s Online Writing Lab (owl.english.purdue.edu/owl) well and many would go there. Or they would do a Google search and take the first example that comes up. I make the rule that if their example is the same as one other group’s, they have to return to their group and find another example. Students usually search a little harder for examples to avoid doing the exercise twice.

Groups then divide up and mix into different groups of three. Each member of the new group shares three examples and explains the reasons. I would be circulating this whole time and listening to the discussions. At this point, I may open up for some group discussion and determine if more instruction is needed.
